Blackbead is a rugged coastal native that handles our heat, drought, and salty wind, which makes it a strong pick for exposed Treasure Coast yards. It has fine feathery leaves and pink-and-white powder-puff flowers in the cool season, followed by contorted brown pods that split open to show glossy red and black seeds the birds take. It's a butterfly host, including for the rare Miami blue, so it earns its keep for wildlife. Use it as a screen, hedge, or foundation shrub.
Care
Water it in for the first month or two, then it's genuinely drought tolerant and low-input. It thrives in our sandy, high-pH soils and takes coastal salt wind. A little compost and mulch is all it wants. It has some short spines, so give it room from walkways, and prune to shape as needed. It's long-lived and easy.
Common problems
Tough and mostly trouble-free. The honest caveat is the spines: it carries short thorns, so don't crowd it against a path or a play area. It won't take standing salt water, so keep it above the flood line. Otherwise pests are minor and it asks for very little.

Does it have thorns?
Yes, short ones. Give it a little clearance from walkways and where kids play, and it's a great tough shrub everywhere else.
How well does it handle salt and wind?
Well. It takes salty wind and spray and coastal exposure, though I'd still keep it out of standing salt water. It's a solid coastal native.
What's with the twisted pods?
Those curl and split open to reveal shiny red and black seeds, which is both a fun ornamental detail and a bird buffet.
