Why it works here
Maidenbush is one of those quiet natives that deserves way more use. It's a compact, rounded, evergreen shrub with small oval leaves that fold slightly toward each other, and its new growth flushes bright red, which gives it a little sparkle without any flowers to speak of. It comes out of coastal upland plant communities, so sandy alkaline soil and drought are its home turf. I use it where a client wants a dense, refined, no-drama screen or specimen that isn't the same five plants everyone else has. In Stuart it wants the warm side of the house, since it's happiest from Vero Beach south.
Care
Establish with regular water, then it's very self-sufficient. It's slow-growing, which means little pruning: one light shaping pass a year keeps it neat. Mulch, an annual compost topdress, and well-drained soil are the whole program. Don't plant it in wet feet.
Common problems
UF's fact sheet says it plainly: no major problems growing maidenbush, and that matches my experience. The two things to plan around are its slow pace, so buy decent-sized plants, and cold snaps, so site it with some protection here at the north edge of its comfort zone.
Common questions
I've never heard of this plant. Why use it?
That's half the reason. It's a tough, tidy Florida native that isn't overplanted, it feeds the local food web instead of just decorating, and its red new growth gives you a boxwood-like look without boxwood's problems in our climate.
How slow is slow?
Expect a few inches to maybe a foot a year depending on conditions. It rewards patience with density: the foliage packs in tight, which is exactly what you want in a screen.
Does it flower?
Technically yes, in spring, but the flowers are small and green and you'll miss them if you're not looking. Bees find them anyway. You're planting this one for foliage and form.
