Why it works here
Pitomba is a slow, compact, glossy-leaved Brazilian Eugenia that makes an easy small specimen or container tree and stays a manageable size for years. The bright apricot-orange fruit is soft, juicy, and highly aromatic with a slightly tart, apricot-like flavor, and it is rich in vitamin C. It is reasonably cold hardy for the Treasure Coast and undemanding, so it is a nice low-key edible for a smaller Florida-Friendly yard.
Care
Give it regular water and slightly acidic conditions where you can, leaning on compost and mulch to build that in our alkaline sand, and correct leaf yellowing with organic micronutrient feeding. Feed with balanced organic fertilizer through the warm season. It is slow and naturally tidy, so pruning is light and mostly cosmetic. Protect young plants from a hard freeze, though mature trees handle brief cold into the upper 20s.
Common problems
Slow growth: the main caveat, it takes its time, so buy the largest plant you can if you are impatient for fruit.
Alkaline chlorosis: yellowing leaves on high-pH soil, handled with compost, mulch, and organic micronutrients.
Fruit fly and quick ripening: like its relatives it can host Caribbean fruit fly, and the soft fruit does not hold long, so harvest promptly and clean up drops.

How cold hardy is it?
Mature trees take brief cold into the upper 20s°F, which makes it a solid choice for our winters. Young plants still want protection on a hard freeze night.
What does the fruit taste like?
Soft, juicy, and very fragrant, a lot like a tart apricot. It is lovely fresh and also makes good jelly, and it is high in vitamin C.
How big will it get?
Usually 15 to 20 ft and slow to get there, so it is easy to keep as a small tree or even a large container plant for a long time.
