Red stopper is a handsome, glossy-leaved native with attractive reddish new growth, and it's rare enough that planting one is a real conservation gesture. It makes a dense evergreen specimen or a screen in part shade, throws clean white flowers in spring into early summer, then orange-to-black fruit that birds and small mammals eat. It's a great choice for a hammock-style bed under high canopy on the Treasure Coast.
Care
Give it part sun and steady moisture while it establishes, then it's fairly drought tolerant. It's built for our calcareous, high-pH sandy soils, so it fits right in. Feed lightly with compost and keep it mulched. It's slow and tidy, so pruning is mostly optional shaping, and it can be limbed up into a small multi-stem tree.
Common problems
Mostly trouble-free once sited right, but it's slow and it's cold-sensitive, so give it a warm, protected spot and be patient. It won't take coastal salt exposure, so keep it back from the beach. Sourcing is the real hurdle, since it's rare, so buy nursery-grown stock and never anything collected from the wild.

How is this different from the Simpson's stopper everyone plants?
Red stopper is rarer, a bit larger, and prefers more shade, with showy reddish new leaves. It's more of a collector's and conservation choice than a common hedge plant.
Will it grow in full sun?
It's happiest in part sun. Full blazing sun can stress it, especially while young, so I'd give it some afternoon relief.
Is it slow?
Yes, it takes its time. Buy the biggest healthy plant you can and enjoy it as a specimen rather than expecting a fast screen.
