Black ironwood is a connoisseur's native, a small, slow growing hammock tree with glossy dark leaves and reportedly the heaviest, hardest wood of any tree in North America, which is exactly why it stands so firm in storms. Its small dark fruit feeds birds and wildlife. Care
Water to establish, then it is nearly maintenance free in dry, well drained ground. The one thing to make peace with is the slow pace, this tree takes its time, so start with the biggest healthy specimen your budget allows if you want size sooner. Little to no pruning is needed given how compact it stays. Mulch and compost are the whole care routine. It is genuinely one of the easiest trees to own once it is in.
Common problems
Impatience, honestly. The slow growth is the main complaint, and there is no fix except a bigger starting tree and a little patience. It is worth the wait.
Very few pests or diseases bother it, so there is nothing to spray or treat in normal use.
Salt flooding intolerance. Keep it out of spots that take brackish water, though it handles ordinary salt air fine.
