Why it works here
Yaupon is a wonderfully adaptable native small tree or large shrub. It takes sun or deep shade, drought, and salt, and the female plants glow with red berries through the cool months that birds strip clean. It carries a fun bit of history too: its leaves make a caffeinated tea, and it is the only plant native to North America that naturally contains caffeine. It shapes easily into a small tree, a hedge, or a screen.
Care
Water to establish, then it is very drought tough. It suckers, meaning it sends up new shoots from the roots and can form a thicket, so decide early whether you want a clean single or multi trunk tree or a natural clump, and pull suckers accordingly. Prune to shape any time, it takes it well. Mulch and compost are plenty. If you want to try the tea, roast the dried leaves, and note that despite the alarming species name, moderate amounts are just fine.
Common problems
Suckering into a thicket. Not a disease, just its habit. Cultural fix: pull or mow the suckers if you want a tidy tree, or let them run if you want a natural mass.
No berries on a lone plant. It is dioecious, so you need a male nearby to fruit the females.
Very few real pests, this is a tough, low trouble native.

You can. Roasted yaupon leaves brew a caffeinated tea with no bitterness, and it is the only caffeine bearing plant native to this continent. Start light your first time, as with any new plant.
Is it a tree or a shrub?
Either, depending on how you prune it. Left alone it is a large multi stemmed shrub, and limbed up it becomes a graceful small tree.
Will it grow in shade?
Yes, one of its best traits. It handles everything from full sun to fairly deep shade, so it fills spots where fussier plants give up.
