Why it works here
Real blue is rare in the garden, and this plant delivers dense spikes of deep blue flowers on tall stems in late summer and fall, held above glossy foliage on handsome speckled stems. Despite the name it is not a ginger at all, it is a relative of the spiderworts, but it has that upright gingery look. It shines in the shade under trees where a lot of flowering plants sulk, so it earns its spot in a woodland-style bed.
Care
Give it rich soil with plenty of compost worked in, and keep it consistently moist, this is not a plant to let dry out. Part to full shade keeps the leaves from scorching. Feed with compost and organic fertilizer in the warm season and mulch heavily to hold moisture and feed the soil. Cut spent flower stems and tidy the clump in late winter. It spreads slowly into a nice colony and divides easily if you want more.
Common problems
Leaf scorch in too much sun or dry soil: move it to more shade and keep it watered.
Cold damage: it can burn back in a freeze but usually returns from the roots. Mulch the base.
Spider mites in hot, dry air: raise humidity and rinse the leaves, and let beneficials help.
