Why it works here
Sugar apple is one of the easier annonas for our area. It stays small, tolerates our rocky and sandy soils, handles drought, and takes light frost, so it is a good fit for a Treasure Coast yard. It is deciduous or nearly so in winter, which actually helps it dodge cold. If you grew up eating sweetsop, this is the tree that brings that flavor home.
Care
Water regularly the first year, then mainly during dry spells and while fruit is sizing up. Feed with compost and balanced organic fertilizer through the warm season and mulch off the trunk. Humidity helps pollination, so in a dry spring, hand pollination noticeably improves fruit set. Prune after the winter rest to shape the tree and keep it low for easy harvest.
Common problems
The big one across the annonas is the annona seed borer, a small wasp whose larvae develop inside the fruit. Bagging young fruit with paper or fine mesh keeps the wasp from laying eggs and is the cleanest organic fix. Mealybugs and scale also show up. Manage them with hose sprays, beneficial insects, and by clearing debris. Anthracnose can cause blossom and fruit blight in wet weather, so prune for airflow and keep the ground clean. Honest note: the seeds contain toxic alkaloids, so never eat or crush them into the fruit.

Do I need to hand pollinate?
Often, yes, especially in dry springs. The flowers need humidity and the right beetles, and a quick hand pollination with a soft brush can be the difference between a few fruit and a full crop.
What are the worms in my fruit?
Almost certainly annona seed borer larvae. Bag the young fruit early with paper or mesh bags and you will keep the wasps out without any spray.
How big does it get?
Small, around 15 to 20 feet, and you can keep it lower. It is one of the more backyard-friendly fruit trees on this list.
