Why it works here
Dahoon is the native holly for our low, damp corners where a lot of trees sulk. It handles wet feet, throws a narrow upright shape that fits tight spaces, and the female trees load up with bright red berries in fall and winter that birds strip through the cool months. It is a clean, well behaved small tree that does real wildlife work.
Care
Give it steady moisture, especially the first couple of years, it is one of the few trees here that genuinely does not mind soggy ground. Mulch keeps the roots cool and moist. Feed lightly with compost if at all. Prune only to shape, it naturally keeps a nice form. In dry sites without irrigation the canopy thins out, so if yours looks sparse, it probably wants more water.
Common problems
No berries. Usually because you have a male tree, or no male nearby. Hollies are dioecious, meaning male and female flowers are on separate plants, so you need at least one male in the area to pollinate the berry bearing females.
Thin, open crown. That is a dryness signal, water more or move it to a moister spot.
Occasional mites or a twig gall, which is a harmless swelling. On a well watered tree these rarely amount to anything, so leave them alone.
Common questions
Do I need two trees to get berries?
Basically yes. You need a female for the berries and a male somewhere in the neighborhood to pollinate her. If a neighbor has a holly you may already be covered, but planting a male and female together is the sure bet.
Will it grow in a wet, low part of my yard?
That is exactly where it shines. Dahoon takes damp and even briefly flooded soil that would kill most trees, so it is my go to for those problem low spots.
How wide does it get? I have a narrow side yard.
It stays fairly narrow, roughly 8 to 12 ft, which makes it one of the better native trees for tight spaces.
